Car finance for foreigners in Portugal: NIF, income, residency (2026)

Short answer: yes, a foreigner can get car finance in Portugal — but in practice it works with a residence permit (título de residência), a Portuguese NIF and proven income. Without residency the bank will almost certainly decline. Rates run, indicatively, around 5–10% (the TAEG depends on the bank and your profile) and the payment shouldn't push your total debt load above ~50% of income. Important: Clara Cars is not a lender and not a credit intermediary — financing is handled by authorised partners, subject to approval; below is what you need. Can a foreigner get car finance in Portugal?

Financial institutions in Portugal have long lent to foreigners, but with conditions. The key requirement is a título de residência (residence permit): without it, the odds are close to zero. The bank then looks at your NIF, stable income and credit history in Portugal. A full non-resident (tourist visa only, no residence permit) is almost never granted car finance — that's the first thing to understand before walking into a dealership.

Which documents you need

DocumentWhy
NIF (tax identification number)No contract can be signed without it
Título de residência (residence permit)Proves legal residency — the base condition
Proof of incomePayslips, recibos verdes or an IRS tax return
Proof of addressA utility bill or rental contract
Portuguese bank account (IBAN)For the direct debit of instalments

The more "transparent" and stable the income (an official salary in Portugal is preferable to freelancing or income from abroad), the higher the chance of approval and the better the terms.

TAEG vs TAN — what really shows the cost

When comparing offers, look at the TAEG, not the TAN (nominal rate): the TAEG is the total annual cost of the loan, including fees, insurance and charges. Two loans with the same TAN but different TAEG cost differently. The TAEG is the only honest basis for comparison. The rate ceiling is set by the Banco de Portugal (taxas máximas), updated quarterly.

The affordability rule (taxa de esforço)

The bank calculates your taxa de esforço — the share of all credit payments in your income. The benchmark is not to exceed ~50% of the combined income of everyone on the contract. If you already have a mortgage or other loans, the amount available for the car falls. That's why an expensive car is approved more cautiously for a foreigner without a long credit history.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get car finance in Portugal without a residence permit?

Practically no. The título de residência is a base requirement of almost all lenders. Without a residence permit (tourist visa only) car finance is, as a rule, declined.

What's the car-finance rate for a foreigner?

Indicatively around 5–10%, but that's an illustrative range — the real TAEG depends on the bank, amount, term and your profile. Compare offers by TAEG, not TAN. The ceiling is set by the Banco de Portugal.

Which documents does a foreigner need for the loan?

NIF, residence permit, proof of income, proof of address and a Portuguese bank account. Stable, official income in Portugal raises the chance of approval.

How much can I borrow?

The amount is limited by your taxa de esforço — the total of all credit payments should not, as a rule, exceed ~50% of income. Having a mortgage or other loans reduces the available amount.

Do you provide credit?

No. Clara Cars is not a bank or a credit intermediary. Financing is handled by an authorised partner, subject to approval; we help with choosing and buying the car, and the payment can be estimated in our calculator.
