One situation comes up almost every week: someone wants to sell the car they have and, at the same time, bring in their next one imported from Europe. That is two jobs at once — finding a buyer for the old car, and finding (and legalising) the next. In Portugal most people solve this in two separate places, with two conversations, two waits, and no way to know whether the timing will line up. It does not have to work that way. Clara Carros handles both ends in a single deal: we value and buy your current car, and we source and import the next one — one valuation, one quote, one contact.
This article explains how a car trade in (Portuguese retoma) normally works, what changes when the trade-in is against an imported car, and how the numbers look when you still have a loan running.
How a car trade in normally works in Portugal
A trade-in means handing over your used car as part-payment for the next one. The dealer appraises your car, sets a value, and subtracts that value from the price of the car you are taking. It is convenient because it settles the sale and the purchase in one signature.
Worth being honest about one thing: the trade in car value is usually a little below what you would get in a private sale. That gap — often 5% to 15% — is the price of convenience. In return you post no ads, host no strangers, run no test drives with unknown buyers, wait no months, and carry no payment risk. If you have time and patience, selling privately gets you more; if you want it done this week, a trade-in is the tool. To see what your car is really worth first, ask for a valuation and buy-back offer.
Clara Carros' twist: trade in against an imported car
There is a gap in the market. Dealers and brands that take trade-ins do not import — they hand you another car from their own stock. Importers do not take your old car — they bring in the next one, but selling the old one is your problem. So anyone who wants to swap their current car for one imported from Germany or another EU country ends up juggling two deals that never talk to each other.
Clara Carros does both. We buy your current car (valuation and trade-in) and handle the turn-key import of the next one — sourcing across Europe, transport, ISV, registration and the first IUC. Both ends go into the same deal and are netted off: your trade-in value comes straight off the cost of the imported car, and you pay only the difference. One valuation, one quote, one contact — no coordinating two companies.

Trade in with an outstanding loan
Plenty of people skip the trade-in because they assume "the car is still on finance, it can't be done." It can. If your current car still has a loan, we ask the bank for the settlement figure (what is left to close the contract). From there the maths is simple:
- If the trade-in value is higher than the debt, we settle the loan and the remainder goes toward the imported car as your deposit.
- If the trade-in value is lower than the debt, the shortfall is added to what you pay for the next car — all in one figure, without ever running two loans at once.
The goal is always the same: you step out of one car and into another without handling the bank paperwork on your own.
A worked example with approximate numbers
The figures below are approximate and only show the mechanics — your actual case always gets its own quote.
- Your current car might be worth roughly ≈ €10,000 in a private sale. As an immediate trade-in, cash and no selling effort, it comes to ≈ €9,000.
- The imported car you want lands at ≈ €22,000 all-in — price at origin, transport, ISV, registration and legalisation.
- Netting the two ends, you pay the difference: ≈ €13,000 (financed or not for that part).
Look at the trade: about €1,000 below a private sale, in exchange for closing everything in a week, in one place, with no ads and no strangers. We do not promise magic savings — we promise a clean process and a single bill.
What to have ready
To give you a firm number quickly, have this ready about the current car:
- Vehicle registration document (DUA) and logbook/plate.
- Current mileage and service history, if you have it.
- Inspection (IPO) status and any known damage.
- If financed: the bank's name and, if possible, the current settlement figure.
- 6 to 8 well-lit photos — front, rear, both sides, interior, and the dash showing the mileage.
With that, we move ahead with a trade-in offer and, in parallel, the search for your next car in Europe.
Is a trade in worth less than selling it myself?
Usually a little, yes — often 5% to 15% below a private sale. That gap is the price of no ads, no strangers, and closing in days instead of months. We always run a valuation so you see the real number before deciding.
Can I trade in a car that still has finance on it?
Yes. We ask the bank for the settlement figure and net it off: if the trade-in covers the debt, we settle it and the rest becomes your deposit; if it does not, the shortfall is added to the next car's price. It all lands in one figure.
Does Clara Carros actually import the next car, or just sell me its stock?
We import. Your trade-in is netted against a turn-key import of the car you pick in Europe — you are not limited to our own stock.
