English-Speaking Car Dealer in Portugal: Buy, Import or Sell Without the Language Barrier

Yes, there is an English-speaking car dealer in Portugal: Clara Cars, based in Porto and working across the whole country. You can buy a car from stock with Portuguese plates, ISV already paid and a legal warranty; order the exact car you want from EU dealer auctions; or sell your current car — and every step, from the purchase contract to the IMT registration, is handled for you in English. You deal with people, not with Portuguese bureaucracy.

Why buying a car in Portugal is hard for expats

The Portuguese used-car market runs in Portuguese. Listings on the big marketplaces are in Portuguese, most stands (dealerships) do not speak English confidently, and every document in the chain — the purchase contract, the DUA (the car's single registration document), the ownership transfer at IMT, the insurance policy — is in Portuguese. Expat forums give the same advice again and again: find a dealer who speaks English, because the paperwork is where deals go wrong.

There are also traps that are hard to see from outside: cars sold "as is" by private sellers with no warranty, odometer fraud on imported cars, and deposit scams on classified sites. We wrote a separate guide on used-car scams in Portugal based on police (PSP/PJ) alerts — read it before you buy anywhere.

Three ways we can help

1. Buy from stock. Cars in our current stock are inspected, reconditioned, on Portuguese plates with ISV paid — you can drive away without touching a single tax form.

2. Order an import. If the car you want isn't on the Portuguese market (or is overpriced here), we source it from EU dealer auctions and handle the full import process: transport, customs declaration (DAV), homologation, ISV, Portuguese plates. Estimate the registration tax yourself with the ISV calculator and the annual road tax with the IUC calculator — two different taxes, both matter for the total cost. The step-by-step process is described in our guide to importing a car from Germany.

3. Sell your car. Leaving Portugal, upgrading, or just done with your car? We buy cars directly — see selling your car before leaving Portugal or get an instant estimate on the valuation page.

Buying from stock: what you get

Every car we sell in Portugal comes with Portuguese registration completed, ISV paid, a fresh inspection, and the legal used-car warranty. Financing is possible through licensed credit partners — see how car credit works in Portugal, including what non-Portuguese residents need. We are a dealer, not a lender: financing is arranged by authorised partners, subject to approval.

Importing on order: honest maths, not promises

Imported cars are a huge part of the Portuguese market, and the same model often lists for less in Germany than in Portugal. But whether an import is worth it for your car depends on ISV (which depends on engine size and CO2), transport and our service fee. We show the full calculation before you commit — no surprises at the border. If you're weighing it up, start with is importing a car to Portugal worth it?

Selling or trading in

We buy cars with Portuguese plates outright — valuation online, offer within a working day, payment before ownership transfer, and we file the IMT paperwork. If you're buying from us at the same time, your current car can be the trade-in. Start with the online valuation.

Which languages do we speak?

English, Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian — the site works in all four, and so do we. WhatsApp: +351 928 374 154.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an English-speaking car dealer in Lisbon or the Algarve?

We are based in Porto but work nationwide — cars are delivered anywhere in mainland Portugal, and the whole purchase can be done remotely in English, with documents prepared for signature.

Can I buy a car in Portugal without speaking Portuguese?

Yes. Buying from a dealer who prepares the contract and files the IMT ownership transfer for you means you never need to handle Portuguese paperwork yourself. Buying privately without Portuguese is riskier: contracts, DUA checks and registration are all in Portuguese.

Do I need a NIF to buy a car in Portugal?

Yes, a NIF (Portuguese tax number) is required to register a car in your name. Residence permit or proof of address is needed for the registration too. We tell you the exact list for your case before anything is signed.

Do imported cars come with a warranty?

Cars sold by a professional dealer in Portugal carry a legal warranty — for used cars at least 18 months by law. Private sales carry no warranty at all, which is one of the main reasons expats prefer dealers.

Can you find me an automatic or electric car?

Yes — automatics and EVs are scarce on the Portuguese used market, so we usually source them from EU auctions to your spec. That is exactly what our sourcing service is for.
